Are you ready for the end of analogue landlines?

Essex County Council’s Digital Essex team wants to make residents aware that there are changes are coming to analogue landlines.

By 2025, traditional phone lines will be replaced by a digital landline service. This means that calls will be made over a broadband line.

For most residents, this change will be straightforward – you’ll also get to keep your phone number. Your telephone provider will contact you before anything changes. It is important to respond and discuss what you need to do to ensure your service won’t be affected.

The switch to digital landline services could affect some residents. If any of the following apply to you, or someone you know, make sure you contact your telephone provider:

You don’t have broadband

You rely solely on a landline

You use a personal alarm or healthcare device

You live in an area with poor mobile signal

You have additional needs

If you’re confused, worried, unsure, or have any questions, call your telephone provider.

D-Day Celebrations

The 80th D-DAY evening on the 6th of June was supported by over 50 people, including 1 veteran Vic Walker who even after having a full day elsewhere came along to watch the lighting of our beacon.

We would like to thank Vic and of course all those who served, without them this could not have happened.

Thank you also to those who came down to the village hall, the Parish council put on a small spread of nibbles and the bar was open.

Jubilee Beacon Lighting

June 2022

Jubilee Weekend. This was a great success and thanks to all who volunteered. Our own councilor Hazel Moore was heavily involved in the preparations along with other members of the Parish and Alison Middleton, the Abridge Community Champion. A big thanks to them all and everyone who attended to make it a great community event. Fortunately, the rain mostly stayed away too. The beacon was lit on Thursday 2nd June for the first time in 2 decades. It took 4 people 3 hours to fill with wood and erect the safety barriers. Thank you to the one volunteer who showed up to help.

We slightly underestimated the speed the beacon would catch alight. Given the amount of wood, we estimated it would take 3-4 minutes to actually start showing any sign of fire but didn’t account for how dry the wood was and how quickly it would take. Apologies for this as the beacon caught light a few minutes earlier than planned. Hopefully, we will be able to light it again before another two decades pass.

Prince Philip has died aged 99, Buckingham Palace announces

Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II's husband, has died aged 99, Buckingham Palace has announced.

In a statement shortly after midday, the palace said: "His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle."

The duke, who was the longest-serving consort in British history, had returned to Windsor Castle on 16 March after spending a month in hospital.

Boris Johnson said he "inspired the lives of countless young people".

The palace said further announcements would be made "in due course".

"The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss," the statement added.

Speaking at Downing Street, the prime minister added: "He helped to steer the Royal Family and the monarchy so that it remains an institution indisputably vital to the balance and happiness of our national life."

Mr Johnson said he received the news of the duke's death "with great sadness".

"Prince Philip earned the affection of generations here in the United Kingdom, across the Commonwealth, and around the world," he said.

Keep your granny safe

Epping Forest Youth Councillors have produced an emotive poster urging young people to be mindful of spreading COVID-19 to older family members.

The poster urges young people to ‘keep your granny safe’ and emphasises the requirement to wash hands, wear a face covering and maintain social distancing when out and about.

A lack of social distancing and gatherings of more than 6 were witnessed by youth councillors among their school friends, and so the post was born.
